About Arkansas City

Arkansas City is the epitome of small town living – where the cost of living remains relatively low, and the people you encounter on a day to day basis are friendly.

The general population, which sits around 12,000, is largely pro-law enforcement.

Ark City is known for its abundance of trees, boasting 11 parks, and 26 years of recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City.

Wilson Park, one of the largest parks in town, sits at the center of the city. It is home to the only retired locomotive that is open for the public. Visitors of the park can even ring the train’s bell.

This park is also host to several events throughout the year, including a seasonal farmers market.

In addition to the parks, there are walking trails in town, and a stocked pond, for those who like to fish.

Ark City also claims one of the largest outdoor pools in the area. It is equipped with two 25 foot tall water slides, two diving boards, shade structures, baby pool and a zero entrance area. This pool is located in Paris Park.

This is one of two pools managed by the local Rec Center. The other pool is indoor and located at the high school.

The Ark City Rec Center has a plethora of programs that run throughout the year for people of all ages.

The Northwest Community Center has programing for local youths, which includes space for homework, gym access and a safe place for them to gather.

Education

USD 470 is our local public school district. Their classes range from pre-k to 12. The district offers extra-curricular activities for many, including sports, music and clubs such as FFA.

The school district also works with Cowley College, so that high schoolers can get a head start on college courses while they are still in high school.

Cowley College rates in the top ten best community colleges in Kansas.
